The Life Of A Dancer And All That Entails

By Leanne Goff

Most people do not know what it is like in the life of a dancer. The misconceptions are countless and innumerable. They span every possible interpretation of the subject. However, by stepping back and looking at the big picture, one can fully understand what it is like in the dancing profession.

Practice is important for many professions, and that certainly applies to dancing. Someone who is interested in orchestral performance cannot simply pick up an oboe and start playing. It often takes years and years of hard work and repetition in order to master that instrument well enough to perform in front of a live audience. The same goes for dancing.

While practice will always be of vital importance, it is not the only necessary ingredient for success. The other part, the yin to the yang of practice, is that of natural talent. Some dancers have it and some do not. Anyone can spend hours upon hours on a single activity, but not everyone will truly excel at it. In order for that to happen, there needs to be a certain level of talent at the very core of the person.

Flexibility is key. Now, this is something that one can fine tune and practice. Not everyone is double jointed. Not everyone can naturally put her feet behind her head. However, many people can stretch their bodies enough so that over time, this is possible. Every joint can be pushed just a little farther. Flexibility is a major part of physical performance.

Anyone who goes to the cinema will recognize that there has been a recent swell of dance movies flooding the box office. Some are good, and some are bad, but they all seem to pain the profession of dancing in an overly simplistic light. Dancers just burst into a complex set of moves without practicing beforehand. Sometimes those moves are synchronized. There is no way this can happen in real life. Dancing is too difficult for that.

Much like cinematic movies, music videos on television usually do not show the full range of dance. They are edited choppily, leaving many dance moves unnoticed or under-seen. To make matters worse, they only show a few moves over and over. There is very little ballroom dance, or modern, or jazz, or any number of types and styles. Mostly, these videos showcase hip hop, which is a very specific niche.

This profession is good exercise. Your friends and family will be amazed at the way your body looks and moves. There are so many painful parts to dancing, but the end result is usually a fit, enviable body.

Also, dancing allows people to showcase their skills in front of a crowd. It is truly a great moment to hear people burst into applause because of your skills. Many people perform just for the applause. It truly is a great feeling.

For many reasons, the life of a dancer is sleepless and difficult. It is an existence spent trying to achieve that which is unachievable, trying to push her body in ways that it is not meant to be pushed. However, it is also a profoundly rewarding and fulfilling experience.
