Website Development Companies: What Is The Internet Archive?

By Arthur Williams

While it probably goes without saying, there are many websites that focus on education and information in general. One of the biggest examples is the Internet Archive, which houses everything from historical documents to classic films. While you may have stumbled upon this site a time or two, you may not be aware of its history. Here is just a small amount of the information that web design companies will be able to provide.

The Internet Archive's history goes back over 20 years, as it was founded in May of 1996. The chairman of the company, Brewster Kahle, was an engineer that had the goal of preserving the Internet's many documents. This is what brought life to the site we know today, as it's now one of the biggest educational platforms that web design companies know. Of course, this is just the start of the history that the likes of Lounge Lizard can provide.

What many people know the Internet Archive for, more than anything else, is its sheer amount of content. Textbooks are among the most prominent, as the site in question boasts well over 10 million books across different languages. There is also a wide amount of audio from over the years, including additional books and even podcasts. To say that there is a staggering amount of educational content would be an understatement, but this isn't all that the site possesses.

There is a wealth of entertainment to be enjoyed courtesy of the Internet Archive, too. For instance, if you into classic computer games, there exist over 2,000 MS-DOS games spanning the operating system's nearly two-decade-long lifespan. Countless public domain films can be watched as well, including "Night of the Living Dead," "Nosferatu," and "House on Haunted Hill." These are just a few classic films that you can stream on the site for free.

When it comes to information, the Internet Archive may be the most accessible website in existence. There is so much that can be learned and experienced, depending on your interests, and it's worth coming back to time and time again. For those that are in college or plan to study in the future, it serves as an invaluable resource. The more that you take advantage of it, the more that you may find yourself consuming content you wouldn't have otherwise.
