How To Communicate To A Husband Hard Of Hearing

By Nancy Walker

Sometimes, we take for granted our ability to do normal things like speaking, hearing or seeing or even touching. Some people live very difficult lives and have to find ways of passing messages. Luckily, for people who do not hear, they can be taught how to communicate in sign language. However, there are other ways if a person did not always have this problem. Below are some of the effective methods to communicate to your husband hard of hearing.

You should always be considerate. Before you talk, get the attention of the person you are aiming to talk to. This gives them a chance to get ready to understand what it is you are going to say to them. Keep in mind that unlike hearing people, they need to put a lot of effort into concentrating so that they can be able to understand what you are saying.

Sometimes when you speak, a person may not be able to understand you. Therefore, you need to be facing them so that they are able to read your lips and fill I the blanks of what they could not understand. As you face them, avoid habits like chewing, moving around and covering your mouth while you are talking.

Enunciate as much as you can and maintain a steady pace of talking. Enunciating makes it clearer to hear whatever is being said. The steady pace of speech gives the person a chance to read your lips and understand you. If you speak too fast they may not at all understand what you are saying while speaking too slow makes lip reading harder.

Pick your venue carefully. When you go to a noisy place, communication will be impossible. At home, make sure the music is off and things such as the Ac unit or fan are not loud. Otherwise, their concentration will be disrupted. The reaching out aid will actually make it worse by amplifying the noise. You should choose quite well-lit places.

Many are times while groups of friend decide to spend time together. In such a case, be mindful of the person who has difficulty hearing. Make sure that you are in a well light place and the person can hear whatever it is you are saying. Make sure you take turns in speaking otherwise it will be quite hard for them to get what is being said.

You should be ready to repeat and or rephrase what you say. The person may not hear what you say on the first few tries but you should not tire of repeating whatever you are trying to say. If repeating does not work, try rephrasing the comment or question. Other words may be easier for the person to hear. You can also try spelling out the hard to hear the word.

Do not treat the person as if they were so delicate. The same way you would find humor when a normal person misunderstands, you should do the same. At the end of the day, it will be a lot of fun and they will be more comfortable speaking to you.
