Looking For A Reliable Guitar Repair

By Nancy Sanders

Many guitarists will at some point need to have a repair done to their instrument. There are many things that can go wrong with both acoustic and electric models and there are a few things to consider before having any work done. There are a couple of options available to you when looking for guitar repair and also a few things you can do to keep your guitar in good condition.

The first place to visit if you need an instrument attending to is one of the music stores in your neighborhood. Most shops will offer a repair and maintenance service and will be happy to carry out any repairs you may need. They will also perform yearly checkups on your instruments and this can help to keep them in good order.

Another place to find repair services is by looking online and there are many businesses who advertise their services. When you contact the site by email or telephone they will ask you a few questions regarding the problem and arrange for your guitar to be shipped to them. They will then inspect the guitar and quote for the work that is required before starting. If you do need to ship an instrument it is important to get shipping insurance in case of loss or damage.

The price you pay for repairs will obviously depend on what kind of problem it is and how long it takes to fix. Small things such as tuning pegs and cleaning can be done fairly cheaply and quickly. More serious issues such as fret dressing and replacement of hardware will be more expensive and take a little longer.

To prevent serious faults developing there are a couple of simple things you can do yourself to maintain your instrument. Always keep a guitar in a case when you are not using it and this will prevent it suffering any knocks. After playing any guitars you should wipe them down with a lint free cloth to remove any moisture that may have come from your hands.

With electric models there are a couple of things that need to be done regularly. Necks and bodies should be well maintained and kept in prime condition. Electrical pots, cables and the pickups should be periodically checked for any wear. Your strings should be changed fairly regularly depending on how much you play and this will help to keep the neck true.

Acoustic instruments also need a little maintenance and much of this can be done by you in your home. Wood should be kept free from dust and debris and the tuners kept well lubricated with specialist oil. If you play regularly and keep the guitar out of its case it should always be kept on a stand and not left leaning against a surface as this can warp the neck and cause major damage.

When storing a guitar away for long periods there are a couple of things to be done beforehand. Always clean the instrument before putting it away for storage and keep it out of direct sunlight. Another tip is to use a sachet of silica gel in the case to absorb any moisture that may be present.
